A dental bridge is a restoration that is used to replace one or more missing teeth. It literally bridges the gap created by missing teeth. A dental bridge is typically made up of two crowns that are placed on the teeth adjacent to the empty space and one or more false teeth in between. The false teeth are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain or a combination of these materials.
Benefits of dental bridges include:
- Restoring your smile
- Improving your ability to chew and speak properly
- Distributing the forces in your bite properly
- Preventing remaining teeth from drifting out of position
The placement of a dental bridge usually takes two dental visits. During the first visit, the abutment teeth are prepared by removing some of the enamel to make room for crowns. Impressions (molds) are then taken of the prepared teeth and a temporary bridge is placed. The impressions are sent to a dental laboratory where your permanent bridge will be made. It usually takes about two weeks for the permanent bridge to be ready.
During your second visit, the temporary bridge is removed and the permanent bridge is checked and adjusted as necessary. Once you are satisfied with fit and bite, the bridge is cemented into place.
It is important to take good care of your dental bridge to ensure that it lasts. Be sure to brush twice a day and floss daily. You may need to use a floss threader or other type of interdental cleaner to clean under the pontic and around the abutment teeth. It is also important to visit us regularly for checkups and professional cleanings.
